This tutorial is going to teach you how to download & install mods in Minecraft using Forge. Forge is the number one mod platform for Minecraft, so most of the mods you encounter require Forge to run. Because of that, it’s import to know how to download and install them. Here, we will show you how to do exactly that!

Step 1) Install Forge

Before you can get any Forge mods up and running, you must first install Forge. While the process of installing Forge is not difficult, it does warrant another tutorial. After you’ve got Forge up and running, it’s time to move on to actually installing Forge mods.

Step 2) Download Your Mods of Choice

From Optifine to NotEnoughItems and everything in between, there are thousands of mods that work with Forge. Pick whichever one you think looks the best to you. One thing to look out for, however, is that all of the mods you want to install are for the same version of Minecraft. If they are not, they will not work.

Step 3) Getting To The .minecraft Folder

You’ve downloaded the mods you want to play, and you’ve made sure they are all for the same version of Minecraft/Forge. Now, how do you actually go about installing them?!? From here, it’s actually pretty simple. Hit the “Windows Key” on your keyboard, and “R” at the same time. This will open up the “Run” program. In the search box, type “%appdata%” and then hit enter. This will open your App Data folder, and in it, there should be a folder called “.minecraft”. Open up that folder, and then move on to the next step!

Step 4) Installing The Mods

At this point, any difficulty when it comes to installing Minecraft Forge mods is done. Now, all you need to do is open the “mods” folder and drag and in the mods you’ve downloaded. Wait, what? You don’t have a mods folder!?! No worries. Just create one like in the gif above. Right-click anywhere in the .minecraft folder, and create a new folder titled “mods” all lower case. Downloading a Minecraft mod is as simple as locating a mod you want on one of these sources and downloading the mod file. The mod will then be saved to your computer, and you'll be able to install it.

How to Install Minecraft Mods

There are a lot of different ways to install Minecraft mods, but the most popular one is a program called Forge. This method requires you to download Forge, and it isn't compatible with all mods, but it is extremely easy.

1. Navigate to the official Forge website.
2. Click on Windows installer if you have Windows or Installer if you have a Mac.

3. The next screen will show an advertisement. Wait for the ad timer to run down, and click Skip in the upper right corner. Do not click anything else on the page.

6. Click the profile called Forge, and then click Play.
7. Wait for the game to fully load, and then exit Minecraft.

Back up Your Minecraft Files Before Installing Any Mod

Mods are usually harmless, and you can typically just delete them if they don't work the way you expected or you just don't want them anymore. However, there's always a chance that something could go wrong. With that in mind, it's a good idea to make a copy of your Minecraft .jar file, or the entire folder, before proceeding.

1. Locate a mod that you have downloaded, or download a new mod. If downloading a new mod, make sure to choose one that it is compatible your versions of both Minecraft and Forge.
2. Locate the folder on your computer that contains Minecraft.
   1. On Windows: Choose Run from the start menu, paste %appdata%.minecraft into the blank field, and click Run.
   2. On Mac: Open finder, hold down your Alt key, then click Go > Library on the top menu bar. Then open Application Support and look for Minecraft there.
3. Copy the .jar or .zip mod file from the first step into the mods subfolder inside the Minecraft folder that you located in the second step.
4. Launch Minecraft, make sure the Forge profile is active, and click Play.
5. Click the mods button to verify that the mod was properly installed.
   

If a mod won't install, make sure that it is compatible with your versions of Forge and Minecraft. There are also cases where one mod can prevent another mod from working.

Minecraft Mods for Platforms Other Than PC

Mods for the non-Java version of Minecraft are called add-ons, and they aren't free. You buy them from the Minecraft store, which you can access from inside the game.

There aren't as many add-ons available as there are mods for the original Java version of Minecraft, but you can find skin packs, texture packs, worlds, and what microsoft calls 'mashups' in the store.

1. Launch Minecraft on a platform that has received the Better Together update (Windows 10, Xbox One, iOS, Android, etc.)
2. Click Store.
3. Locate a skin pack, texture pack, world, or mashup that you want.
4. Click Unlock.
